Sliding is an important skill that many baseball players do not know how to do. You cannot be afraid of the dirt. A perfect slide involves timing. You want your foot to hit the base as quickly as possible. Practice sliding daily until you can accurately judge when to begin your slide for maximum distance.

Whenever you hit the ball in fair territory, run at full steam. Even if it appears like an easy out, you’ve got to give it your all. It may be that the opposing team misplays the ball, or it may take a tricky bounce giving you just enough time to reach base.

When hitting make sure that your legs are in the right place. Proper athletic balance is important. Your legs need to be a bit wider than shoulder-width from each other. Flex your knees so that your weight is centered on the insides of your feet. Your knees need to be slightly bent toward one another.

Make sure you use the proper grip when hitting a baseball. You should go with a “standard” grip. The middle knuckles of your hands should be on the bat. Make sure the bat is across the callus line of your fingers instead of the back of your palms. This grip betters quickness and bat speed.

Always wear protective equipment when playing baseball. Just like any sport, injuries happen in baseball. Especially when batting, you need to protect your head. That means you need to wear a helmet whenever you enter the batter’s box. One poor pitch can mean a fastball hitting you in the noggin. Those pitches will give you an idea of the pitchers speed and the ball’s action to the plate. Plus, the additional pitches will help wear out the pitcher over the course of the game. A tired pitcher makes more mistakes.

Keep your head up, your eyes level and focus on the ball when batting. You should be looking over your front arm. If you shift your eyes or move your head, your rear shoulder will shift in reaction. Remaining focused on the ball and keeping your head immobile will give you better timing and more consistency.

As soon as contact is made with the ball, it is important that the hitter takes off running towards first base. This will help ensure that the hitter does not get called out. If the ball is a foul ball, the hitter will be called back to the plate to hit again.

Practice as often as possible to maximize your potential. For the best results, start with a warm up that lasts at least 10 minutes and then get into team and individual practice drills for another 20. After that, five minutes of base running and ten minutes of situational drills and team defense are good. After all this ten minutes can be spent on defense drills along with a cool down period. Finish with a team meeting and you have completed your workout.

When pitching, you have to remember that focus is everything. As soon as you are going into the kick position to pitch the ball, you must absolutely remember that you never take your eyes away from the catcher’s glove. This is to ensure that you have proper aim when releasing the ball.

As a batter, sometimes you have to sacrifice yourself. It’s all about being the best team player that you can be. Sometimes it’s more important to move a runner over, and the safer play is a bunt or sacrifice fly from you. It may not make you as popular as if you’d hit a home run, but sometimes you have to help your team to make good plays.

Baseball bats come in a variety of lengths, weights and sizes. Consider your height and strength when choosing a bat. A longer bat gives you more reach, while a heavier bat adds power. The size of your hands can help you determine the right diameter for your bat. Swing a few different baseball bats before deciding which one feels the most comfortable for you.
